Offseason Weight Training

By A. Boggs - Burns so good.  At least that's what Elliott Cole told me when I walked into the McGugin Center weight room today.  I'm glad that's the way he feels about it.

Anyway, the men’s hoops team may not be practicing and playing like they do during the playing season, but that still doesn’t mean the team isn’t working.  In fact, men’s basketball head strength and conditioning coach Mark Davis is pushing the guys harder than ever.  This is the time of year to build on strength and make the kind of gains that will help the Commodores in the fall.

“This is my in season,” said Davis as the guys were going through a strenuous circuit of exercises.  “We focus on physical development during this time, and after going through a maintenance phase during the season, now we’re trying to reawaken the body – to shock the system back to life and gain some strength back.”

Today, the team was doing a “300” circuit, a workout done by the actors in the movie “300”, with a few adjustments made by Davis.  The workout consisted of nine different pushing movements, with a certain number of repetitions assigned per station.  Each guy will do as many reps as possible, as fast as possible, to get to that assigned number – whether it takes one set or 10.

“The goal is to do this as fast as possible,” said Davis.  “Inevitably, they will work until failure.  But, they’ve got to push through the failure to get that number."

The strength and conditioning coach was loving every minute of the workout - as for the guys, I think they were digging it too.  I think they know that this will help them get maximum effort on the Memorial Gym court later this year.

  1. My question is, is AJ working hard, he needs the most improvement of anybody.

  2. Anonymous, I know for a fact that AJ works hard. It's ironic to say that arguably one of our best players needs the most improvement on the team; I think the freshman have plenty of growing and improvement to do. AJ can't be a star if he doesn't have a supporting cast around him.

  3. i'm sure he is, as is everybody else on the team, playing college athletics myself everyone wants to win and has that drive to work as hard as you can to reach that peak. i think AJ knows he needs to get stronger and be more of a physical force inside...i would dare to say he doesn;t need anyone to tell him that on a blog

  5. AJ is definitely talented. A full offseason with the team should help him make the big jump everyone expected to make from this year to last. He just looked worn out from the summer to start the season and was held back by the injuries late. Hopefully Andre is doing well, and the 'Dores will be an extremely athletic, deep team in the fall.

  6. Jeffery Taylor needs upper body strength more than anyone. He's got the skills and talent he just needs the strength to compete with the big guys of the SEC. He's got star written all over him.

  8. Jeff Taylor is as athletic a player the Commodore's have ever had and may be one of the most intelligent. He is fluent in, what, 5 languages? He needs to add somewhere in the neighborhood of 20-30 lbs of lean muscle to that long frame he has and he deperately needs to add consistency to his long range jumpers. I hope the coaching staff realizes the God given abilities this young man has. NBA scouts are already salivating over his potential.
