Commodores move back into contention to host regional

by Barca Blog

With quality RPI wins over LSU (No. 15) and Louisville (No. 4) in the last week, the Commodores (No. 16) have played themselves back into the conversation of being one of the 16 NCAA regional hosts.

Let's check out the latest postseason projections to see what the experts think...

Kendall Rogers of Rivals.com moved Vanderbilt up to a No. 1 seed, but has the Commodores traveling to No. 2 seed UConn for the regional. Rogers has Liberty as the No. 3 seed and Minnesota as the No. 4 seed.

Mark Etheridge of SEbaseball.com placed the Commodores as the No. 2 seed in the Atlanta Regional against host and top seed Georgia Tech, No. 3 seed Washington State and No. 4 seed Ball State. Etheridge's projections were made prior to Vanderbilt's win over the Cardinals on Tuesday.

The Commodores (36-13, 12-10 SEC) have two conference series left in the regular season against Mississippi State (road) and Arkansas (home). If VU wants to play postseason baseball at Hawkins Field, they need to take both series to remain in serious contention. Typically, no more than five SEC schools earn the right to host a regional. Rogers and Etheridge have four SEC teams hosting at the moment: Florida, South Carolina, Arkansas and Ole Miss. Other contenders include Vanderbilt, Auburn, and LSU.

NCAA Regional host sites will be announced Sunday, May 30 -- the same day as the SEC Tournament Championship. The NCAA Selection Show will be held on May 31.
