MBB SEC Tournament bracket update

by Barca Blog

It's official... Vanderbilt will be the No. 2 seed in the East for next week's 2010 SEC Men's Basketball Tournament after Kentucky defeated Georgia in Athens last night.

The Commodores can still earn a share of the regular season conference title if they defeat South Carolina Saturday (Buy Tickets) and Kentucky drops their home finale to Florida on Sunday. The Wildcats clinched the top seed due to their head-to-head tiebreaker over the 'Dores.

VU will open SEC Tournament play Friday, March 12, at 8:45 p.m. CT inside Bridgestone Arena in downtown Nashville. They will face the winner of Thursday's first-round matchup between the West No. 3 seed and East No. 6 seed.

While the SEC West standings are a big mess at the moment, we do know that the East No. 6 seed will either be Georgia or South Carolina. They are both tied with 5-10 records with one game left, but Georgia holds the tiebreaker for the No. 5 seed due to their division won-lost record. The only way South Carolina can move up to the No. 5 seed is if they defeat Vanderbilt and Georgia falls at LSU Saturday.

Mississippi State has already clinched the No. 1 seed in the West. So based on the remaining schedule, the No. 2 and No. 3 seed from the West will probably come down to the game between Arkansas and Ole Miss in Fayetteville on Saturday. Auburn could also slide into the No. 3 seed if they win at Alabama and the Razorbacks lose to the Rebels based on their division won-lost record. That scenario would give the Rebels the No. 2 seed and first-round bye.

One other note on the bracket... Tennessee will be the No. 3 seed in the East and Florida the No. 4 seed. That means the Vols will be on the same side of the bracket as Kentucky, while Florida and Mississippi State will be grouped on the other side with the Commodores.
