The better half

by Barca Blog

Inside the numbers as we get ready for Saturday's showdown with No. 1 Kentucky.

Boggles' stat of the day: Vanderbilt has trailed at the half in four of their first five SEC games, but the Commodores have rallied in each of those games to come away with a victory. In the second half of league games, Vanderbilt has a scoring margin of +10.8 and are shooting an astonishing 55.2% from the field in the five games. VU also has a rebounding margin of +6.6 in those five games, and a +0.8 turnover margin.

"We play good in the second half for some reason," head coach Kevin Stallings said. "I don't know what the deal has been. I'd like to see us play that way both halves. We've been a good second half team and a good end of the game team and those things are important. We pride ourselves on being good at the end of games and so far we have been."

Vanderbilt's only lead at the half came against South Carolina on January 16 when the Commodores led, 41-35, at the break.

The stat I choose to ignore: Vanderbilt has a 7-14 all-time record against teams ranked No. 1 in the Associated Press poll, but has an 0-8 record against number one teams away from Memorial Gym (including 0-6 in Lexington).

Overall, Vanderbilt holds a 4-10 record against top-ranked Kentucky teams.

Just a reminder, tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. CT on ESPN and ESPN360.com. Read the official game preview here.

  1. I like the Boggles stat of the day. Pretty impressive how good the Dores are in the second half. It shows that this team knows how to win and fight through adversity when they are down.
