Jack attack

by Barca Blog - It's been a good summer for Jack Armstrong.

Armstrong, who's pitching for the Wareham Gatemen in the Cape Cod League, has been lights out against some of the best college hitters in the country with a 3-0 record and a 2.22 earned-run average. Just this week he was selected to the 47th Under Armour Cape Cod Baseball League All-Star Game (which will be played at Fenway Park July 23), and also named Pitcher of the Week with a complete game shutout over Hyannis.

In fact, one scout told the Cape Cod Times,“(Jack's) the best I’ve seen down here, the most dominant. He throws a hard curve. His velocity was a little down today (against Cotuit) but was still 93. He’s still impressive.”

It will be exciting to see how Armstrong progresses when he returns to Vanderbilt for his sophomore year this fall. He only appeared in six games in relief as a freshman.

(Side note -- Vanderbilt's Russell Brewer will also play in the Cape's All-Star game for the second year in a row.)

  1. Am I correct in assuming this is the son of former Cincinnati Red Jack Armstrong?

Also, did I hear correctly that a relative of Carl Yastrzemski's (Grandson?) will be playing for the 'Dores next year?

    Thanks.

  2. yes, he is the son of the former Reds pitcher. Michael Yastrzemski is a part of the incoming recruiting class... but nothing is official until he attends his first day of class (since he was selected in the MLB Draft by Boston in the 36th round).
