Soul searching after tough loss

by Barca Blog - "We got it handed to us tonight."

Those were Coach Johnson's first words to the press following his team's disappointing performance against Mississippi State Saturday evening.

And he was right. For whatever reason, the Commodores just never seemed to get it going, and before you knew it, the Bulldogs left Nashville as the unexpected victor.

"We just didn't have the edge that we needed," Johnson said following the 15-3 loss. "We didn't take advantage of the opportunities and we just weren't mentally tough enough."

As a fan, there's not much you can pull from a game like this, other than the defense did a courageous job to put the team in position to have success. The offense, on the other hand, just wasn't able to execute. Simply put, 157 yards of total offense won't cut it at this level, especially against a Bulldog team that allowed almost 600 yards to Auburn a week ago.

It's gut-check time for the Commodores (1-2, 0-2 SEC). Memories of last season's bowl heroics are in the past. We'll see how the team responds to adversity starting with their trip to Rice next Saturday.

"We have a lot of soul searching to do," Johnson added, "but we're not going to give up. We have a lot of football to play. Nobody in our locker room is going to give up. There are some low guys in there right now and they're going to come out of this and learn from tonight."

  1. I'm starting Senior Mackenzi Adams in Houston. If I'm really loyal to my Sophmore QB Smith, I'll grit my teeth and start him but the hook will come real quick. Not all Smith's fault at all, but the team needs a spark.

  2. Absolutely terrible. I was afraid our offensive coaches didn't learn fromast year and it proved to be the case.
