Friday baseball update- 6:05 p.m. CT start

By Travis Young - Here is Vanderbilt's starting lineup for Friday night's game against Georgia at Foley Field.

Weather Report from Athens, Ga: Party Cloudy, 82 degrees, feels like 86 degrees with 67% humidity.

1. Brian Harris SS
2. Riley Reynolds 2B
3. Steven Liddle RF
4. Curt Casali 1B
5. Aaron Westlake DH
6. Andrew Giobbi C
7. Jason Esposito 3B
8. Jonathan White CF
9. Joe Loftus LF
SP: Sonny Gray (3-1, 5.34 ERA)

Georgia's starting pitcher Trevor Holder (7-2, 4.34 ERA) is coming off a five-inning no-decision to No. 17 Florida in his last start (May 1). Holder allowed six runs on 10 hits while walking two and striking out two against the Gators. The 6-3, senior righthander has 53 strikeouts and 23 walks in 64.1 innings of work this season.

Last season, Vanderbilt tagged Holder for a career high 10 runs while scattering a career high 12 hits to the Commodores in six-innings of work.

Sonny Gray is making his first Friday night start in the Southeastern Conference. The hard-throwing freshman leads the team in saves with five and has 37 strikeouts in 32 innings of work this season.

Vandy's 100/100 Club

By Weinman - Friday has been highlighted by Commencement on Vanderbilt's campus. Due to some inclement weather on Friday morning, the main graduation ceremony was moved inside Memorial Gymnasium. I imagine the three graduates above (Amy Malo, Jenn Risper and Tina Wirth, pictured with Coach Balcomb) felt right at home in those friendly confines.

In their four years in Nashville, this trio continued Vanderbilt's winning tradition by claiming a total of 100 victories while wearing the black and gold uniforms. Today, exchanging jerseys for black caps and gowns with gold tassels, they continued a tradition of even more importance at VU -- 100% graduation. Congratulations, ladies!

More construction photos

by Barca Blog - Take a minute to look at some new photos of phase two of the Vanderbilt Athletics facility renovation campaign. You can see in the picture above that the gigantic entrance in front of Gate 2 has made some progress since our last update in March.

If you'd like to support the facility upgrades, please contact the National Commodore Club at (615) 322-4114.

If you want to crown him..

by Barca Blog - One player to keep an eye on when the Commodores travel to Georgia this weekend is Bulldog first baseman Rich Poythress.

Poythress (.406, 21 HR, 75 RBI) is putting up arcade-like numbers in his junior season and has a legitimate shot to become the first player since Rafael Palmeiro (.415, 29 HR, 94 RBI) in 1984 to win the conference's triple crown title. With only two regular season weekends remaining, the Grovetown, Ga., native is first in batting average and RBI and is second to only Alabama's Kent Matthes (23 HR) in home runs. Very impressive.

And speaking of Palmeiro, I figured I'd throw in a link to the old video of his testimony to Congress in 2005 (especially with all the Manny and A-Rod talk this week). Who could ever forget when Palmeiro emphatically stated under oath, "I have never used steroids. Period." There's nothing more comical than reading from a script while pointing your finger and sounding like a robot at the same time. Kudos to you, Rafael.

Of course, five months later, Palmeiro was suspended for 10 days by the MLB for testing positive for the drugs.

Close shave

by Barca Blog - You might remember when the 2006-07 Vanderbilt men's basketball team fell to 1-3 after a disappointing home loss to Furman. That very next game, VU rebounded with a thrilling 98-93 overtime win over Toledo, which some consider the turning point to the Commodores' Elite Eight run (as I like to call it) to New Jersey.

Well, according to the Associated Press and the Tennessean, federal officials are looking into that game in connection with a point-shaving scandal led by a couple of Toledo players on that squad.

I won't get into all of the specifics, but you can read about it in these two articles:

Women's Golf has strong showing on first day of NCAA Regionals

By A. Boggs - Freshmen Marina Alex and Andrea Messer each shot a one under-par 69 to put the Commodores in third place among the 12 teams who started this morning after the first round of the NCAA Regionals in Gainesville, Fla. Photos of Cutler in new digs

by Barca Blog - Check out the first photos of Jay Cutler in a Chicago Bears uniform courtesy of Bill Smith, ChicagoBears.com.

For the last five weeks, Cutler has been familiarizing himself with his new offensive playbook during offseason workouts. The former Commodore is already drawing high praise from his quarterbacks coach, Pep Hamilton.

“Jay’s a pro,” Hamilton told Larry Mayer of ChicagoBears.com. “He’s very sharp. He’s picking it up extremely well. After we finish our offseason workout sessions out on the field, he spends extra time here not just studying the playbook but spending time with coach Turner going through the [videotape] cutups from last year."

“He has amazing arm talent. He can make all the throws with ease. What a lot of people don’t realize about Jay Cutler—and I didn’t realize this about him prior to him joining the Bears—is that he’s a really good athlete. He has extremely quick feet.

Sowers called up from minors

(Cleveland Indians)

by Ryan Schulz - Former Commodore southpaw Jeremy Sowers was called up from Triple-A Columbus on Wednesday and will make his first start of the season on Thursday when the Cleveland Indians play at the Boston Red Sox.

Sowers was in a tight battle for the fifth spot in Cleveland’s rotation during spring training before being optioned to Columbus where he was 1-1 with a 2.25 ERA in four starts this season. He also had 22 strikeouts in 24 innings and the opposition was hitting .240 against him.

Sowers took the place of Aaron Laffey, who was moved to the bullpen.

The time has come

by SID - Folks have been wondering at what point hard-throwing freshman Sonny Gray would get his first collegiate start. Well the time has come as Gray will start Friday night against Georgia in a shakeup of the rotation. Junior southpaw Mike Minor will get the start on Saturday with junior right-hander Drew Hayes scheduled to start on Sunday.

Old Commercials

by Barca Blog - Over the next week or two, I thought it would be fun to post classic commercials from my childhood.

Today's video is from McDonald's. Yes, they've had a lot of classic clips but one of the first that comes to mind is when the customer rattles off the entire menu to the cashier, all within a 30 second spot.

Like the rest of you, I tried to memorize the lyrics back in the day, but could only get as far as: Big Mac, Mc DLT, a Quarter-Pounder with some cheese, Fillet-o-Fish, a hamburger, a cheeseburger, a Happy Meal.

There was always one person at school that could recite the whole thing... and he/she was then nominated as the cool kid for the week (until some other kid discovered slap bracelets).

Anyway, enjoy the clip. I guess the fast-talking Micro Machines guy was already booked when Mickey D's set up the spot. And if you'd like to see another old school commercial let me know - click here

Lacrosse returns to NCAA Tournament

by Barca Blog - After earning its third straight NCAA Tournament berth, the Vanderbilt women's lacrosse team will open against sixth seeded Notre Dame (15-4) in the first round on Sunday, May 10.

Considering Vanderbilt was one of the final at-large teams selected, the Commodores (10-6) received a pretty good draw. The 'Dores dominated the Irish, 18-11, in Nashville almost three weeks ago, but will have to travel to Alumni Field this time around, a place where Notre Dame is 7-2 this season. ND is also riding a four-game winning streak since that loss, highlighted by BIG EAST tournament wins over Syracuse and Georgetown (both in the NCAA Field) to secure their first-ever league championship.

If Vanderbilt gets past the Irish, they face a possible quarterfinals matchup with third seed North Carolina (13-4), who plays Towson (13-5) in the first round. The Tar Heels edged the Commodores, 14-13, in overtime in both team's season opener on February 15 in Nashville.

It should be noted that Vanderbilt is on the opposite side of the bracket of four-time defending national champion and top-seeded Northwestern (19-0).

Check out the full bracket plus take a look at Inside Lacrosse's tournament breakdown.

Baseball adds Tuesday doubleheader

VU baseball will play two 7-inning games against Belmont on Tuesday at Hawkins Field. First pitch is 4 p.m. CT and admission is free to both games. Click here for more information.

Byars eyes NBA

Sunday baseball update from Columbia

by SID - Pretty nice day in Columbia. Mostly cloudy and 78 degrees. There has been some changes in the lineup as the coaches are trying to get guys going at the plate. Caleb Cotham (5-4, 4.84 ERA) will get the start on the mound and will look to hold the South Carolina offense at bay.

1. Steven Liddle RF
2. Riley Reynolds 2B
3. Curt Casali 1B
4. Aaron Westlake DH
5. Andrew Giobbi C
6. Brian Harris SS
7. Jason Esposito 3B
8. Jonathan White CF
9. Joe Loftus LF
P Caleb Cotham

The team is wearing the gold pinstripe jerseys with black underneath. Despite what has happened the last two days, this game is significant as a Vanderbilt win would put the team ahead of South Carolina in the league standings. The Arkansas game that was canceled could play a huge role in the team's SEC tourney chances. In this scenario the one less game would help, but there are also several ways it could hurt. How things play out is still very much in the air, so a win here would be huge.

You can follow today's action at VUcommodores.com.

Saturday baseball update- 6:10 p.m. Start

by SID - The rain that has hampered most of the country has altered tonight's pregame activities. The game is now scheduled to start at 6:10 p.m. CT. Vanderbilt couldn't take batting practice with lightning and storms in the area.

The lineup is the exact same as last night. Jonathan White's 3-for-4 night on Friday gets him another start in centerfield.

1. Brian Harris SS
2. Steven Liddle RF
3. Curt Casali 1B
4. Andrew Giobbi C
5. Aaron Westlake DH
6. Joe Loftus LF
7. Riley Reynolds 2B
8. Jason Esposito 3B
9. Jonathan White CF
P Drew Hayes (4-2, 4.22 ERA).

Hayes is making his third SEC start of the season and is coming off a solid outing against Mississippi State last Saturday. He gave up two runs on five hits in 5.2 innings with five strikeouts and three walks in the win.

SC's Nolan Belcher (2-3, 4.17 ERA) will be the opposite of yesterday's starter Sam Dyson. He is 5'8 and 155 pounds with a fastball in the high 80's.

Fans can follow tonight's action at vucommodores.com.

Liddle power

by Barca Blog - Steven Liddle’s monster home run in the top of the first Friday went so far over the right field fence at Carolina Stadium that it hit a car parked across the street. It was Liddle’s eighth blast on the year, which is tied for the team lead, and his third in the last four games.

The sophomore outfielder has always handled the bat well, but his power surge has been an added bonus in the Commodore lineup considering he didn’t have any collegiate home runs coming into the season.

“Last year, I was more of a line drive hitter,” Liddle said. “This year I’m just seeing the ball better and when you’re in hitter’s counts you might as well get the bat head out and see how far you can hit it.”

The Franklin High product leads Vanderbilt in almost every offensive category during SEC play this season including batting average (.365), runs (25), hits (31), doubles (9), homers (6), total bases (58) and slugging percentage (.682). He’s also second in walks (13), RBI’s (18) and on-base percentage (.449).

Carolina Stadium

by SID - I promised an update on South Carolina's stadium, simply named Carolina Stadium (click above for larger image). This palace is definitely one of the finer ballparks in the country. The field was in perfect shape and the place is very well laid out. The price tag was upwards of $35 million dollars and they spared no expense. I have yet to see the 4,000 square foot weight room and locker room but reports are it is better than some big league set ups.

As someone who has seen a variety of college parks over the years, to me I put it right behind Arkansas' in the conference (and therefore the country). The lack of a visitor locker room and quality parking is the big difference from my view.

Be back with starting lineups in a couple of hours. Looks like Drew Hayes will get the start on the mound.

NFL Notes

by Barca Blog - Here are a couple of tidbits involving former Commodores in the NFL:

*Offensive lineman Justin Geisinger signed Tuesday with the Carolina Panthers. Geisinger appeared in four games with Washington last season. Friday Baseball Update From Columbia

by SID - Weather in Columbia is 82 degrees and partly cloudy so we should be good to go tonight.

The starting lineup is nearly the same as all three games from last weekend except in centerfield where Jonathan White is back in the lineup. South Carolina's starting pitcher Sam Dyson is a hard throwing right-hander and White has had success against such hurlers in the past.

The ball was a launching pad in batting practice with both teams hitting several balls out. The wind should die down when the sun goes down so it may not play as big a factor as in a day game.

Mike Minor has had four straight games with double-digits strikeouts and has fared well against the Gamecocks in the past. In 2007 he made his first SEC start against SC in Columbia and struck out nine in seven innings, allowing one run on five hits to pick up the win. In 2008, he went 8.2 innings with 10 strikeouts, allowing three runs on six hits in a no decision.

The last two seasons both Friday night games have gone to extra innings with the Dores coming away with 4-3 wins.

Carolina Stadium is a beautiful ballpark. More about it during the day tomorrow. Time to get ready for the game.

1. Brian Harris SS
2. Steven Liddle RF
3. Curt Casali 1B
4. Andrew Giobbi C
5. Aaron Westlake DH
6. Joe Loftus LF
7. Riley Reynolds 2B
8. Jason Esposito 3B
9. Jonathan White CF
Mike Minor LHP

Commanding attention

by Barca Blog - After a few tough outings earlier in the season, sophomore closer Russell Brewer has regained the command of his pitches that allowed him to flourish during his freshman campaign.

The Norwood, N.C., native has been nearly untouchable in his last six appearances for the Commodores, allowing only three hits while striking out 14 and walking two in eight innings of shut-out baseball.

“I just remained confident in myself and in my pitches,” Brewer said. “I have the same stuff that I had earlier in the year, I just think I had some bad luck. The key thing is to go out there and stay confident by pounding the strike zone. I am throwing more strikes and getting ahead of hitters, while earlier in the season I was probably trying to pick at hitters instead of going right at them.”

Brewer’s ERA had jumped to 5.19 in late-March after he allowed four runs in two innings in a midweek start against Austin Peay. He’s lowered it down to 2.79 by only surrendering one run in the last month.

“At the beginning of the year, Russell ran into some tough luck and that may have sent him sideways a little bit but he never showed it mentally,” head coach Tim Corbin commented. “He’s been very consistent the last two weeks. He’s thrown a lot more strikes and when a pitcher throws more strikes, more confidence comes along with that.”

Last Wednesday, Brewer kept Louisville in check, striking out three in 1.2 innings of hitless relief to pick up his first win of the year. He also collected his third save against Mississippi State Sunday when he struck out the lone batter he faced in Vanderbilt's 8-6 victory.

Brewer was a pleasant surprise for the 'Dores in 2008 after being converted from an infielder to a pitcher. He went on to display the most consistent arm out of the bullpen, leading the team with eight saves while going 4-3 with a 3.52 ERA. Even more impressive was his control of the plate as he struck out 52 and only walked 10 in 46 innings.

With Brewer back to his old form and the addition of freshman flame-thrower Sonny Gray, Corbin has multiple options to throw at opponents in the later innings when the game is on the line.

“Russell’s one of those guys who has experience in the closer role,” Corbin added. “He is an older guy and he has been there before so I think we are in a position right now where we have two pretty good guys to use at the end of the game.

“It comes down to who can finish the game at the point we need them too. I don’t think we really have that closer tag on anyone. You don’t always know how your pitchers are going to feel and right now Brewer is our best guy.”
