Jenkins wins third Freshman of the Week nod from SEC

By A. Boggs - Freshman John Jenkins won his third Freshman of the Week honor from the SEC for his play against Georgia and Arkansas last week. He averaged 13.5 points, 1.5 rebounds, and 1.5 assists in Vanderbilt’s two wins over the Bulldogs and Razorbacks. He scored 14 points against Georgia and 13 against Arkansas.

Earlier this year, he won two consecutive SEC Freshman of the Week awards for the first two weeks of January of 2010. He was honored for his performances against Middle Tennessee State and Florida January 4-11, when he averaged 13.0 points and 4.0 rebounds in two Commodore wins over the Blue Raiders and Gators. He was also named the SEC Freshman of the Week for his performances against Manhattan and Southern Miss December 27-January 4, when he averaged 17.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 3.0 assists in the wins over the Jaspers and Golden Eagles.

Jenkins to wear number 23

By A. Boggs - Vanderbilt's only signee for men's basketball has chosen a number.

Vanderbilt newcomer John Jenkins will wear number 23 when he dons the Black and Gold this fall at Memorial Gym. Jenkins will be the 19th player to wear #23, with Charles Davis and Ronnie McMahan being two of the more recognizable names to have the number.

Jenkins wore #12 in high school at Station Camp. Jordan Smart currently wears 12 for the Commodores.

Jenkins and most of his new Vanderbilt teammates are in Nashville for summer school, where they are attending classes, working out and playing pickup.

At one point, each player was asked to name the best shooter in this class... and the decision was unanimous: Vanderbilt signee John Jenkins.

By A. Boggs - Vanderbilt signee John Jenkins was recently elevated to a five-star signee by Rivals.com and ended the year as the 15th ranked prospect in the nation according to the website's Class of 2009 final rankings. Jenkins becomes the first five-star prospect to sign with the Commodores.

Men's Hoops News

Boggs -Incoming freshman John Jenkins scored 27 points at the 36th annual Capital Classic High School All-Star Basketball game at American University in Washington, D.C., according to Jesse Johnson of VandySports.com.  The game pitted the nation’s top high school players against players from the Washington, D.C., area.

“Playing against some of the nation's elite prospects, Jenkins scored a game-high 27 points but saw his U.S. All-Stars fall to the Capital All-Stars, 129-98," writes Johnson.

Jenkins also won the three-point shootout at the Capital Classic.

Jenkins won a “shoot off” against Jamal Coombs-McDaniel, a UConn signee, where he defeated Coombs-McDaniel 12-8 in the 30-second tiebreaker.  Jenkins made 16 threes in the semifinal round and 13 in the finals.

Also in hoops news, Jeffery Taylor was named an honorable mention freshman All-American by CollegeHoops.net.  Congrats to Jeffery!

Jenkins Named Tennessean High School Player Of The Year

By A. Boggs - Incoming men's hoops recruit John Jenkins was named the Tennessean Boys High School Player of the Year on Sunday after leading the nation in scoring at 42.3 points per game. Amazingly, he did not score below 30 points in a single game all year!

The accolades are piling up for the 6'4 shooting guard -Jenkins was named Gatorade's Tennessee player of the year, won his second Class AA Mr. Basketball award and accepted invitations to two national all-star events in Washington D.C.: the Capital Classic on April 9 and the Reebok All-American Game on April 18, according to Jeff Lockridge of the Tennessean.

Vanderbilt hoops' signee Jenkins in SI

By Travis Young -- Vanderbilt men's basketball signee John Jenkins has been recognized in the "Faces in the Crowd" section of the March 2 issue of Sports Illustrated for surpassing the 3,000 career point total in a 66-32 District 8-AA on Feb. 21. With his 3000th point Jenkins became the 19th player in Tennessee High School history to notch 3000 points, putting his name among players like Anfernee Hardaway and Tony Delk.

The future Commodore is currently the nation's leading scorer, averaging an impressive 42.3 points per game, including a career-best 60 points in a double overtime game versus Gallatin. Rivals.com has Jenkins listed as the 37th-best player in the country and eighth-best shooting guard in the class of 2009.

Jenkins featured on WSMV

On WSMV's Inside Sports Sunday, Rudy Kalis had a nice piece on men's basketball signee John Jenkins.

The 6'4 sharpshooter from Station Camp (Gallatin, Tenn.) inked his National Letter of Intent with the Commodores last month and is averaging 44 points per game in his senior season.

Here's what John had to say to Rudy:

On defenses keying in on him:
"We work on that in practice a lot. I have triple teams in practice and quadruple teams. It helps me a lot in the games."

On being unselfish:
"I'd rather pass the ball and get my teammates involved. That's the most important thing since we're a young team. It's all about winning."

On watching Davidson's Stephen Curry:
"The way he moves on the court is so smooth. He's a great player. I like his game a lot."
