Stand up and shout

Recognize these guys?

Chris DeGeorge, Adam Smotherman, T.J. Greenstone, Larry Smith and Joel Caldwell had an up-close view of the women’s basketball team’s impressive 74-58 victory over Tennessee Sunday afternoon at Memorial Gym.

The football players arrived over thirty minutes prior to tip-off to secure their seats in the front row of the student section. It was the perfect location to give the Commodores an extra boost of vocal support against their in-state rivals.

“We're real good friends with the team,” Greenstone said, "and it’s just a lot of fun to come out here and watch them play. They deserve our support.”

Student-athletes from several other Vanderbilt sports were also in attendance to cheer on their peers, a true sign of the camaraderie between teams throughout the athletic year.

“We all go to class and play our respective sports,” Greenstone added. “Everyone is just rooting for each other. We're all in it together.”

One side note -- It’s no surprise that Greenstone’s been coming to the women’s basketball games regularly since he was a true freshman in the fall of 2007. His mother, Mary Beth, played basketball at Edinboro University and his older sister, Mindy, is a senior forward for North Greenville (S.C.) University.

Nickson: 'Best way you could end it'

Chris Nickson deserved a storybook ending.

The fifth-year senior quarterback was a major factor in getting the Commodores to its first bowl game since 1982. He led Vanderbilt to its first 5-0 start since World War II and played a key role in the sixth victory at Kentucky.

Even with injuries the past two seasons, Nickson guided Vanderbilt to 13 wins (in 27 games) during his three years as a starter and finished as the school's all-time leading rusher at that position.

"If you were writing a book, this is about the best way you could end it," Nickson told The Associated Press. "It's been a great journey for me, full of ups and downs. I've grown as a man and developed so much of my character just through football. It just shows if you put your mind to something you can finish it. It's been a great, great journey."

With eighteen starters from the bowl game scheduled to return in 2009, including redshirt freshman quarterback Larry Smith, the future looks promising according to Nickson.

"And we have about 12 other guys just like (Smith) on the bench right now. It's going to be fun watching them. I can't wait to see them play."

Oh, what a feeling

One of the special things about yesterday's game is that so many die-hard fans, who have waited a lifetime for a bowl victory, were finally rewarded.

Like Daniel Stockton.

I've known Daniel since I was hired at Vanderbilt in 2003. Through good times and bad, he's been a loyal supporter of the program and always had faith in the Commodores.

And I know there are more of you out there like him. Congratulations to all of you and thank you for supporting the best student-athletes in the country.

Daniel posted a video of the final minute of celebration from section 207 at LP Field. It will definitely give you chills.

If you have a fan video from the game, let me know, and I'll put it in the blog.

Bowl Ticket Update

Vanderbilt has sold out of its bowl ticket allotment.

All will call tickets will be available at 12:30 p.m. CT at LP Field's Gate #9 on Wednesday. If you'd still like to reserve your seats, please contact the Music City Bowl.

Also, due to coverage of the men's basketball game versus St. Francis tomorrow (11 a.m. CT) and the Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowl, the McGugin Center Ticket Office at Vanderbilt will be closed.

First Play?

I just returned from the Coaches Luncheon at the Wildhorse Saloon in downtown Nashville.

The fan-friendly event was the last function featuring players and coaches from both bowl teams before tomorrow's game.

The highlight of the luncheon came during the Q&A session with the crowd (which was hosted by ESPN's Mark Jones). One of Boston College's defensive lineman secretly submitted a question to find out what Johnson's first play call of the game would be.

Coach Johnson responded without hesitation (and to the delight of the crowd):

"Either a kickoff or kickoff return."
