Shaw's 60 leads to Top 10 finish

By Weinman - Vanderbilt Men's Golf Head Coach Tom Shaw had an impressive showing in the Capital City Invitational, held last week at McCabe Golf Course in Nashville. Shaw made headlines with an opening-round 60 on the north and middle nines at McCabe, carding 12 birdies against only two bogeys.

Shaw would finish in the Top 10 among the professionals at the 54-hole pro/am event. Earlier this summer, Shaw also had solid outings at the Tennessee State Open and advanced through a local qualifying event for the U.S. Open.

Shaw Top 20 at State Open

By Weinman - Men's Golf Head Coach Tom Shaw earned a Top 20 finish in the 61st annual Tennessee State Open Championship presented by Coca-Cola at Gaylord Springs Golf Links. After making the 36-hole cut as one of the top 60 golfers in the field of 140, Shaw fired a four-under 67 in Thursday's final round to end the three-day event with a score of 214 (+1) to tie for 20th.

Shaw's final round included five birdies and was the third-best score of the day. Rising junior Ryan Haselden and assistant coach Justin Emil each took turns on the bag for Shaw, who advanced through a U.S. Open local qualifying event in Georgia earlier this month. Shaw will play in a sectional qualifying event beginning on June 1 in Memphis for the right to play in the 2009 U.S. Open at Bethpage (N.Y.) Black.

Shaw, DelGreco make first step toward U.S. Open

By Weinman - Qualifying for the 2009 U.S. Open Golf Championship began last week with over 9,000 entrants vying for a chance to play Bethpage Black as part of the 156-player field. Players face 18 holes of local qualifying followed by 36 holes of sectional qualifying to earn one of hte coveted spots.

On Monday, Vanderbilt Head Coach Tom Shaw and rising sophomore Trey DelGreco both advanced through a local qualifying event at the Marietta Country Club in Kennesaw, Ga. In a field of 132 golfers, only nine places were available for the sectional qualifying rounds.

Shaw shot a two-under 68 to tie for third only one stroke off the lead. DelGreco's one-under 69 put him in a seven-way tie for the final three spots before a birdie on the first playoff hole punched his ticket for the next round. Shaw and DelGreco will compete in one of 13 sectional qualifying events between May 25-June 8.

Assistant coach Justin Emil and junior Hudson Johnson are competing in a local qualifier in Memphis this week, so check back for updates on those two. Local qualifying results can also be found on the USGA's web site.

And, of course, Johnson and his Commodore teammates will open NCAA Regional Championship play this Thursday at the Club at Olde Stone just up the road in Bowling Green, Ky.
