Vanderbilt (40-15, 16-12) went 1-2 on the week dropping the final regular season series of the year to Arkansas at Hawkins Field … The Commodores won their 40th game on Thursday, marking the third time in four years (2007, 2008, 2010) they have achieved that mark and the fourth time in eight years under Tim Corbin (2004 as well).

VU lost the final series of the regular season for the third straight year and the fourth time in five years … Vanderbilt extended its win streak over the Razorbacks to seven straight games after Thursday’s win before dropping the final two games by a combined three runs … The 16 conference wins tied for the second most wins in the Corbin era. VU won 16 in 2004 and 2006 and then a school record 22 in 2007.

The Commodores hit .260 as team with five homers, four doubles and 12 runs scored (4.0 per game) ... Freshman outfielder Connor Harrell led the team with a 5-for-10 (.500) showing at the plate … Sophomore third baseman Jason Esposito went into the series having reached safely 15 consecutive times and got on base the first two times on Thursday (double, single) to extend the skein to 17 before getting called out on strikes in his third at-bat. He was one shy of the NCAA record of 18 consecutive times to reach base (Shaun Larkin, Cal-State Northridge 2002).

Sophomore first-baseman Aaron Westlake homered in all three games on the weekend and has four round-trippers over the last six games dating back to the Mississippi State series. He now has 11 on the year to lead the team, and it’s also a new career high, besting the 10 he hit as a freshman a year ago … Bryan Johns went 2-for-6 (.333) with a double and two RBI in two starts on the weekend. VU is 28-7 with him in the starting lineup.

The Commodores had a 3.67 team ERA with 31 strikeouts and nine walks in 27.0 innings … Sonny Gray picked up his team leading eighth win of the year on Thursday, allowing three runs on seven hits in eight innings with nine strikeouts and three walks … Grayson Garvin threw three innings of one-hit scoreless relief with five strikeouts and a walk in Saturday’s loss.

VU finished the regular season tops in the league in ERA at 3.66 and third in team batting average at .316.

Vanderbilt will start postseason play for the fifth straight season and the seventh in eight years under Tim Corbin starting on Wednesday against Arkansas.

Vanderbilt went 4-0 on the week, capturing a thrilling 17 inning midweek showdown over Louisville (11-10) and then sweeping Mississippi State in Starkville for the team’s second straight SEC road series win … The Commodores have now won six in a row and seven of eight entering the final weekend of conference action.

VU is currently in fourth place overall in the league standings and can finish no worse than sixth by the end of play on Saturday … With Sunday’s win over Mississippi State, the Commodores clinched their fifth straight SEC tournament appearance and their seventh trip to Hoover in eight seasons under Tim Corbin.

The Commodores series sweep was the third straight over the Bulldogs and VU now has won 10 straight games against MSU … In two of the four games this week, the team rallied from a two-run ninth-inning deficit to tie the game and then won it in extra innings.

Vanderbilt's 40 runs scored this weekend ties for the most runs scored against an SEC opponent in a three-game series in school history. The Commodores have scored 40 runs against an SEC team only once and that happened in 2007 when they swept Florida in Nashville.

As a team VU hit .340 with seven homers, 24 doubles and 51 runs scored in four games (12.75 per game). Sophomore Jason Esposito had a record setting weekend at the plate this week, starting with his walk-off solo homer in the 17th inning against No. 8 Louisville on Tuesday. Esposito was on fire in the Commodores sweep over Mississippi State over the weekend going 8-for-11 (.727) with four doubles, six runs scored with seven walks and three stolen bases. He broke a 27-year old school record having reached base safely 15 consecutive times from Friday to Sunday (still active). Record was 14 set by Tim Brecht in 1983. On Sunday he walked five times tying the school single game record for base on balls last achieved in 1999. For the week he was 10-for-19 (.526) with five doubles, a homer, two RBI and nine runs scored with three stolen bases.

Brian Harris went 8-for-19 (.421) on the week with four doubles, a homer and five RBI. He walked seven times and was hit by a pitch twice giving him an NCAA best 31 on the year … Connor Harrell went 7-for-17 with two doubles, four RBI and six runs scored … Curt Casali was 6-for-17 (.353) with a homer, five doubles and five RBI … Joe Loftus went 7-for-20 (.350) with three doubles, three RBI and five runs scored … Andrew Giobbi was 8-for-24 (.333) with two homers, three doubles and 10 RBI … Bryan Johns went 4-for-9 (.444) with a double, triple, home run, two runs and four RBI in three games played.

As a team VU had a 5.20 ERA with 40 strikeouts and 18 walks in 45.0 innings. Jack Armstrong moved to 7-1 on the year with the Commodores lone quality start of the week. He allowed two runs on nine hits in seven innings with four strikeouts and two walks on Sunday … Will Clinard picked up the win against Louisville on Tuesday with six innings of relief. For the week he allowed two runs on four hits with five strikeouts and three walks in 6.2 innings of work … Richie Goodenow made two relief appearances and struck out five with a walk in four innings of one-hit scoreless work.

Vanderbilt will close out the regular season at home against Arkansas starting on Thursday. The team will recognize seven seniors prior to Friday night’s game.

Record for the Week: 2-1

Last Week
5/7: LSU 16, Vanderbilt 15 (10)
5/8: Vanderbilt 6, LSU 2
5/9: Vanderbilt 4, LSU 3

This Week
5/11: vs. Louisville, 6 p.m., Nashville (Flood Relief Game)

5/15: at Mississippi State, 2 p.m. CT, Starkville
5/16: at Mississippi State, 1:30 p.m. CT, Starkville

Vanderbilt went 2-1 on the week, capturing its first Southeastern Conference road series of the year against defending national champion LSU … The Commodores handed the Tigers their first SEC home series loss of the year and the first since dropping two of three to Tennessee last year. VU has now won the last three series against LSU dating back to the 2006 season.

As a team, VU hit .308 with four homers, six doubles, a triple and 25 runs scored in the three games ... Freshman second baseman Anthony Gomez (the nation’s top freshman in batting average) went 6-for-13 (.462) on the weekend with six runs scored, a homer and two RBI. He hit his first collegiate homer with two outs in the ninth against the Tigers Friday night, tying the game at 15-15.

Sophomore outfielder Joe Loftus seemed comfortable at the plate in Baton Rouge going 6-for-14 (.429) with two doubles, a triple, a homer, seven RBI and four runs scored. He was a single away from the cycle on Friday night after notching a career best five RBI and then game up with the game-winning two-out two-run single in the eighth inning of Sunday’s 4-3 win over the Tigers.

Third baseman Jason Esposito had a great weekend at the plate and in the field: going 5-for-12 (.417) with a double, three stolen bases and four runs scored while also playing a flawless third base with three putouts and 12 assists in the three games. Aaron Westlake went 5-for-14 (.357) with a double, four RBI and two runs scored

After the pitching staff combined to give up 16 runs on a season high 19 hits allowed, they buckled down under the steady pitching of Saturday starter Taylor Hill and Sunday starter Jack Armstrong … A day after the offensive barrage, Hill held the Tigers scoreless for 8.2 innings before giving up a two-out, two-run single in the ninth. He closed out the game for his first collegiate complete game, allowing the two runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts and a walk.

Jack Armstrong followed that performance up on Sunday, allowing two runs on six hits in 7.2 innings with three strikeouts and two walks. He left the game with the Commodores holding a 4-2 lead and is now 6-1 on the year.

Sonny Gray had his shortest starting outing of his career on Friday against LSU, allowing seven runs on seven hits in three innings with four walks and three strikeouts. The resilient sophomore bounced back from that outing, asking for the ball in relief on Sunday. He picked up his first save of the year with 1.1 innings of two-hit relief, allowing one run while striking out three.

As a team the pitching staff had a 6.18 ERA with 26 strikeouts and 10 walks in 27.2 innings pitched. Take out the Friday anomaly and the staff (consisting of Hill, Armstrong and Gray) sported a 2.50 ERA with 14 strikeouts and four walks in 18.0 innings, limiting the Tigers to a .217 average.

The Commodores return home for a special midweek game against Top 10 ranked Louisville on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Hawkins Field. Vanderbilt athletics will open up the remaining tickets for the game (approximately 1,300 available at 8:30 a.m. in the Ticket Office on Tuesday). Donations will be accepted for the Nashville chapter of the American Red Cross to go to flood relief efforts. In addition whatever tickets were sold (single game and season tickets), those proceeds will be donated from the Athletic department to the Red Cross as well as all monies collected by concessions … VU will then have its final SEC road trip of the year at Mississippi State next weekend in Starkville.

5/7: at LSU, 7 p.m. CT, Baton Rouge
5/8: at LSU (CSS), 6 p.m. CT, Baton Rouge
5/9: at LSU (Cox Sports), 1 p.m. CT, Baton Rouge

Vanderbilt went 1-1 on the rain-shortened week, falling by a run to Austin Peay in Clarksville on Tuesday before pounding Georgia, 17-5, on Friday night … The three game series against the Bulldogs was shortened due to torrential rain in the middle Tennessee area.

The Commodores snapped a three-game losing streak on Friday and scored more runs in that game than they have in five of their first six Southeastern Conference series (Kentucky- 18 in three games). The 17 runs were also the most scored in a conference series opener since scoring 17 against Georgia in 1992.

VU hit .294 on the week with three homers and 18 RBI … Anthony Gomez was 5-for-10 (.500) with three runs scored on the week while Andrew Giobbi was 3-for-8 (.375) with a homer and three RBI.

The Commodores next scheduled home game will be on Tuesday, May 11 against Louisville at 6 p.m. That contest will be a rematch of last season’s NCAA Louisville Regional championship game.

5/2: vs. Georgia, 1 p.m. CT, Nashville

Vanderbilt went 3-2 on the week, winning the first three games of the week, before dropping a doubleheader to Tennessee on Sunday … With the doubleheader sweep, UT has now won five of the last six meetings against the Commodores … Vanderbilt has lost all three of its SEC road series this year … The team’s 4-2 loss in the first game of the doubleheader was the team’s first in three extra inning contests this year. They defeated Indiana, 6-5 in 11 innings and Austin Peay, 2-1 in 11 innings earlier this year.

Last Tuesday’s win over Lipscomb was the team’s 30th victory of the year, marking the seventh straight season the team has reached that plateau … The Commodores are 23-2 in non-conference games and 9-9 in league play ... Tuesday’s game against Austin Peay could be the final non-conference regular season game of the year. VU has played 43 games, with 14 left on the schedule. Teams can play only 56 games in the regular season, so barring a rainout this week or next week at LSU, the Louisville game on May 11 would have to be cancelled.

VU made seven errors in the three games against UT (.942 fielding percentage) and that led to four unearned runs. The pitching staff sported a 1.71 ERA with 23 strikeouts and nine walks in 26.1 innings against the Vols and limited them to just a .214 team batting average … Offensively the team hit .299 for the week and just .247 against UT.

On Friday night, Sonny Gray won his second straight game to improve to 6-4 on the year, tying a season high with 10 strikeouts. He allowed just one run on a solo homer in the third inning and gave up just three hits and did not walk a batter. Gray lowered his ERA to a team-best 2.22. The Smyrna, Tenn., native has 72 strikeouts in 69.0 innings this year while opponents are hitting just .205 off him.

Taylor Hill allowed three runs, two earned on nine hits with five strikeouts and no walks in 6.2 innings in game two of double-header. Hill has been phenomenal in his last three starts. The junior has allowed only five earned runs in his last 23 innings for a 1.96 ERA. Hill has 15 strikeouts and only one walk in his last three starts combined. The right-hander hasn’t seen much run support in his last three outings as he sports a 0-1 record during that stretch.

Jack Armstrong gave up two runs, both unearned, on four hits in 4.2 innings with three walks and no strikeouts in game one to earn the no-decision in game one of Sunday’s double-header.

Curt Casali’s solo home run in the top of seventh was his fourth long-ball of the year. It marked his first home run since homering on March 6 against Illinois State. Casali led Vanderbilt at the plate this weekend, going 5-for-9 (.556) with a home run and an RBI.

Aaron Westlake was 4-for-11 with three RBI while Connor Harrell had three RBI in two games … On the week, Westlake was 10-for-21 (.476) with two doubles, a homer, six RBI and five runs scored … Harrell was 7-for-15 (.467) with two doubles, five RBI and four runs scored.

Jason Esposito was 7-for-20 (.350) with a homer, seven RBI and five runs scored while also perfect on five stolen base attempts. With his stolen base in the first inning of game one Sunday against Tennessee, Esposito raised his season total to 21 stolen bases. The mark also tops his 2009 season-total of 20 swiped bags. In 43 games this year, Esposito has converted 21 of 24 stolen base attempts and is tied with Chris Bisson of Kentucky for the league lead.

VU closes out its six-game road trip Tuesday night at Austin Peay before hosting Georgia for three games over the weekend. After the series against the Bulldogs, VU will be on the road the next two weekends (at LSU, at Mississippi State) before closing out the regular season against Top 10 ranked Arkansas (May 20-22).

The trio combined to pitch 24.2 innings out of a possible 27 and allowed just six runs, five earned, on 15 hits with 15 strikeouts and eight walks. They had a cume 1.82 ERA and each had the longest outings of their career.

Taylor Hill gave up a solo homer on the first pitch of Sunday’s game and just allowed a single in the next 7.2 innings. He was the tough luck loser, allowing one run on two hits in 7.2 innings with a walk and three strikeouts.

Vanderbilt went 3-2 on the week sweeping a midweek series against Wofford, before dropping two of three at Florida over the weekend … VU entered the weekend on an eight-game winning streak, including a 7-0 home stand, before falling by one run to Florida … Head coach Tim Corbin notched his 300th win at Vanderbilt in the Commodores 7-0 win over Florida on Sunday. He needs seven wins to pass Larry Schmittou for second place on VU’s career coaching wins list.

Sophomore right-hander Jack Armstrong came up big in the series finale against the Gators, tossing six shutout innings of four-hit baseball. Richie Goodenow (1.2) and Chase Reid (1.1) closed things out with scoreless relief. It was the Commodores third shutout of the year and the first that didn’t involve the combo of Sonny Gray and Corey Williams who shutout Niagara in the season opener and Kentucky on March 26.

Williams suffered a season ending injury on a line drive in the seventh inning of Saturday’s game. The ball broke his right kneecap and despite the obvious pain, Williams had the presence of mind to grab the ball and backhand it to first for the out.
