Former Vanderbilt baseball standout Mike Baxter drilled an opposite field home run against the Nashville Sounds at Greer Stadium on Monday night. Baxter went 3-for-3 on the day with a pair of singles, a home run and two runs scored to lead Triple-A Portland to a 4-3 win over Nashville.
Baxter's stellar effort Monday was witnessed by members of the current Vanderbilt baseball team and other Commodore faithful.
A native of Queens, N.Y., Baxter is hitting .287, including a .400 on-base percentage with three home runs, eight RBI and nine stolen bases in 33 games for AAA Portland.

Video: Baseball Snow Removal

With only 15 days before Vanderbilt’s baseball season opener at Hawkins Field, the Commodores have been putting in some labor intensive hours to remove the snow and ice that fell in the Nashville area last Friday.
On Wednesday, I caught up with the two men that were put in charge of the project (volunteer assistant coach Larry Day and former VU standout, Mike Baxter). I asked them about the process they used to remove the blanket of snow that has covered the field the past three days.
I’ll have to say it was pretty remarkable in the amount of snow that was moved off the field or pushed to the warning track.
It’s also noted that Daniel Harris’ idea of using two space heaters and hand warmers to melt the snow on the infield grass failed after using one to many Clark Griswold’s personalized extension cords.
