Commodores present check to Red Cross

Prior to Saturday's game, the Vanderbilt baseball team along with David Williams, Vice Chancellor for University Affairs and Athletics, presented a check to the American Red Cross totaling $24,689.82 to go to flood relief efforts in Middle Tennessee. Monetary donations as well as clothing and food items were collected at the Commodores' game against Louisville on May 11.

Former Dores assist with flood relief

Portland Beavers Mike Baxter and Matt Buschmann returned to Nashville earlier this week for a series against the Nashville Sounds, but playing baseball wasn't the only thing they had in mind.  The former Commodores spent time off the field volunteering to assist Hands on Nashville and the Community Resource Center with flood relief efforts.

The game raised over $25,000 to benefit the Nashville chapter of the American Red Cross. Just an amazing show of support by the Commodore Nation!

How did we reach that impressive total?

*Vanderbilt coaches, staff, and former players collected donations from fans at the front gates of the stadium

*Sodexo concessions and the Vanderbilt Bookstore contributed their sales profits

*Maggie Corbin and daughter Hannah baked and sold cupcakes

*A silent auction was held with the following items:

-Vanderbilt Baseball USA-themed jersey signed by entire team

-Package of autographed photos and record of Lady Antebellum

-Autographed golf flag by Brandt Snedeker

-Autographed photo of flooded Hawkins Field signed by the entire team

-Replica Chicago Bears helmet signed by Chris Williams, Jay Cutler, and Earl Bennett

*Louisville, the Commodores' opponent, generously made a monetary donation

Also, fans brought in food items and household goods to give to Second Harvest Food Bank and Hands on Nashville

It truly was an incredible night to give back to Nashville. A big, big thanks to everyone who pitched in to help those in need.

More Commodores lending a hand

Along with all the great work being done by those associated with Vanderbilt athletics in the Nashville community, a tip of the hat to the lacrosse team. The Commodores will travel to Duke this weekend for the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday. After practice this afternoon, the ladies took time out to prepare and deliver sandwiches and bottled water to residents and volunteers working in the Richland Creek area.

It was another small but oh-so-important gesture as Middle Tennessee begins to rebuild. Kudos also to the Tennessee Titans, who were in the neighborhood working hard on many battered homes. Great to see those guys, including 2006 VU grad Jovan Haye, giving back to the community that loves them so much.

Vanderbilt coaches, staff, student-athletes and fans rallied together to help out with flood relief and recovery efforts for Middle Tennessee at the Commodores' baseball game Tuesday night.

Thanks to the generous donations of those in attendance, over $20,000 was raised for the Nashville chapter of the Red Cross. Just an amazing show of support from the Commodore Nation!

Video: Baseball game to support flood relief

Nationally ranked Vanderbilt and Louisville meet Tuesday, May 11, at Hawkins Field in a key game that has now taken even more meaning after the Department of Student Athletics announced it would serve to help Middle Tennessee flood relief efforts.

Vice Chancellor David Williams is making the remaining unsold tickets for the game, approximately 1,300 in the 3,700 seat stadium, free of charge to the public with the hope that all fans will donate to the Red Cross and/or the Second Harvest Food Bank at the entry gates. Here are some key game details:

*The free tickets will begin to be distributed next Tuesday (May 11) at 8:30 at the McGugin Center box office. They will be distributed on a first-come basis with no assurances that there will be enough to meet the potential demand.

*Game time is 6:00 p.m. It is a rematch of last year’s NCAA Tournament Regional final.

*Monetary donations are encouraged to the Nashville Area Red Cross while canned goods and water will be donated to the Second Harvest Food Bank.

*Vanderbilt officials are working on a variety of special activities for this game.

VU concessionaire to donate game profits

Sodexho Sports and Leisure, the exclusive concessionaire for all Vanderbilt Athletic events, announced Wednesday evening that it is donating 100% of its profits from the Louisville baseball game to the Nashville chapter of the Red Cross. The word came on the heels of a declaration by Vanderbilt Vice Chancellor David Williams that next Tuesday's game would be dedicated to Middle Tennessee's flood victims.

"Sodexho wants to be a good neighbor and contribute to our mid-state's recovery," said Daphe Newsom, General Manager of Vanderbilt Concessions. "We are delighted to be a part of this worthy effort."

All remaining tickets to the Louisville game, approximately 1,300 as of Wednesday, will be given away free of charge with monetary donations to the Nashville Red Cross and/or food and water donations to Second Harvest Food Bank strongly encouraged to all attendees. University officials are working on to add some special features to the game, which is a rematch of last year's NCAA Regional final.

Baseball game to raise money for flood relief

With the Middle Tennessee area hit by the devastating effects of torrential rain and flooding, Vanderbilt athletics wants to help out with flood relief and recovery efforts.

Vanderbilt's baseball game against Louisville on May 11 will be a special event with free admission and monetary donations being accepted for the Nashville Red Cross. The remaining 1,300 tickets will be dispensed on the day of the game at the gate and fans will be encouraged to donate in lieu of purchasing a ticket.
