Johns talks about Commodores' sweep

by Barca Blog (Photo by Jimmy Jones)

Vanderbilt closed out a three-game sweep of Mississippi State with a 14-4 romp over the Bulldogs on Sunday in Starkville.

The Commodores continued their offensive surge with 15 hits including nine for extra bases. VU broke the game open with a seven-run fourth behind three-run homers by Bryan Johns and Andrew Giobbi. It was Johns' first career round-tripper as a Commodore.

Overall, Vanderbilt scored 40 runs on the weekend, which tied a school record for the most runs against an SEC opponent in a three-game series.

Johns spoke with Joe Fisher on the WNSR postgame show following the sweep:

On hitting his first home run as a Commodore:
"It felt good. I was just happy to get in the runs from third and first. I was trying to hit a ball in the air and drive it to the gaps to avoid the double play. It just happened to go out."

On how hitting can be contagious:
"It helps to have guys in scoring position because it helps the hitter get better pitches. It also puts pressure on the pitcher. It's definitely contagious."

On how he's handled not being in the lineup every day:
"I'll do whatever is the best for the team. I'm ready to play every day. If I'm not in the lineup, I'm rooting for the guy that's in the game. We have a lot of good players, so we have a chance to win every day no matter who is out there for us."

On Coach Corbin's message to the team after the game:
"He congratulated us on our performance. He told us that we had to move on and start getting ready for Arkansas. We learned a lot from this series but we've got to move ahead and keep getting better every game."

On winning six straight games:
"It's been a good week. We're starting to play the baseball that we're capable of. We're still getting better."

Three Commodores will play for Outlaws

By Travis Young

Earlier this month, the Nashville Outlaws released its inaugural season roster and three Vanderbilt players will call the “Music City” its home for the summer. Drew Fann, Bryan Johns and Navery Moore are one of 12 players with ties to the Middle Tennessee area who either prepped at area high schools or are current student-athletes at local universities that will be on the inaugural team.

Johns, a junior-college transfer, is currently leads Vanderbilt in hitting and ranks towards the top of the SEC leader-board in batting average (.370) and on-base percentage (.481). Fann has posted a solid sophomore campaign and has made the most of his opportunities. A native of Murfreesboro, Fann is hitting .405 with an .577 (obp%) in 37 at-bats this year. Moore will stay home this summer after playing for Cotuit in the Cape Cod League last summer. The former Battle Ground Academy standout has a record of 2-0 this year and has 11 strikeouts in 10.1 innings.

The Outlaws coaching staff will be made up of Brian Ryman, Jerry Bell and Rich Benjamin. Ryman will be the head manager while Bell and Benjamin will handle the pitching and hitting duties, respectively.

The Nashville Outlaws are the newest member of the Prospect League and will play 28 home games at Hawkins Field in Nashville. The Outlaws will open the season on the raod against the Terre Haute Rex on Friday, June 4th. The Outlaws first home game will be on Tuesday, June 8, against the Springfield Sliders.

The Prospect League, formerly known as the Central Illinois Collegiate League (CICL), has roots dating back to 1963 and has showcased Major League stars like Mike Schmidt, Kirby Puckett, Ryan Howard, and Jonathan Papelbon. With its family-oriented promotions and affordable ticket prices, the Prospect League is one of the fastest growing and most recognized summer baseball leagues in the country.
