SEC spring football teleconference

by Barca Blog

The SEC conducted its spring football coaches media teleconference (listen to audio) on Thursday afternoon.

Head coach Bobby Johnson made the following comments:

Opening Statement:
"We had a very good spring. We had one major injury: Adam Smotherman with a torn ACL. We're hoping to get him back sometime in the first half of the season, but it will probably be somewhere in the middle.

"We had some different staff assignments that we were working on. We're also testing some players at certain positions and thought we got some good work in and created some competition. I think everything started to come together in the last five practices and we really liked the progress that we made."

On possible SEC expansion:

"I really haven't thought about it that much. I think Commissioner Slive's been on the forefront of just about everything as it came down the pike. He was there for the TV contract for ESPN. He knows what's going on, and I'll trust he'll let us know at spring meetings what he's thinking and what our situation is.

"I think it's a conference that can certainly attract other schools if they're interested in tough competition. It's going to be an interesting thing to watch to see how it progresses."

On Thomas Welch being drafted by New England:
"Thomas was actually a quarterback in high school at one time, and his high school moved him to tight end, which is what we recruited him as. When he came here, we had a lot of injuries on the offensive line, and Thomas was getting bigger, so we moved him to offensive tackle. In fact, during his sophomore year, his first playing time was against Florida. He did a good job so we kept him there.

"Because he once was a quarterback and tight end, he's very athletic for his size. He's close to 6'6 and over 300 pounds and carries it well. He has good feet.

"Coach Belichick came down to visit him and talked with everyone about him. I think he feels good about Thomas as one of those guys that's a good athlete that can handle his position."

On the challenges of coaching at an older age (in reference to Steve Spurrier):
"There are some physical challenges and it helps if you workout regularly to help you withstand the rigors of the early mornings and late nights with a lot of travel. You know, there's a lot of time out in the sun. It's pretty tough. It's smart for most people to workout.

"When someone decides to get out of coaching, I think it's going to be for a multitude of factors. I don't think it's just health. I think it's also about what you want to do with the rest of your life. Everyone has their own criteria."

On coaching staff changes and identifying offensive problems from last year:
"It's not necessarily just the coaching staff. I think it's the whole offense, from coaches down to the players it has to get better, and that's including the head coach, too. That's why I made those (staff) changes.

"I think I had Jimmy (Kiser) in a pretty tough situation last year. I was trying to not rock the boat and keep things the same with a little bit of changes. He was play calling last year but didn't have the full power of vetoing certain plays or planning the game plan around the way he likes to call a game. Plus he was coaching the quarterbacks, and that's the guy who has the toughest job. I just thought it made more sense for Jimmy if he's going to be the play caller to coordinate it, too.

"It took us a little while in spring practice to adapt. We started clicking pretty good in the last five practices with three of those being scrimmages. We feel pretty good about it."

On different schemes on offense:
"There are going to be some different looks with maybe even a different tempo. We're going to have about three different tempos. We're not going to be a team that's going to run up to the line of scrimmage all the time. We're going to try to get the defense to identify itself some and then react off of that. Sometimes we'll try to put them in a hurry-up mode. Sometimes we'll try to milk the clock down further and try to help our defense from staying off the field.

"On the schemes, most of them are going to be the same. Jimmy has some good ideas on things we can add easily and not overburden our team mentally."

On the strength of the SEC:
"It's always great to be in the Southeastern conference. When you go out recruiting, it just helps your program because people want to play in it, especially in the major parts of the country that we recruit in, the southeastern footprint.

"We feel that we have a great product and give recruits a chance to get a fantastic education while playing in the best conference in the country. When Alabama wins the national championship, or Florida and LSU, it's just a feather in our hat also, and we try to take advantage of it."

"As far as the gap (in the SEC), each team can only be signing 25 per year, supposedly, and you just have to go out there and get yours to make sure that gap doesn't widen any more. We know the situation that we're in here at Vanderbilt. We're under a little more restrictions that other schools and we accept that. We want a certain type of student-athlete to come here and we're prepared to compete with those guys."

Slive comments on conference expansion

Associated Press

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Southeastern Conference commissioner Mike Slive says the league isn't considering adding teams but is working on a plan to keep up with other conferences if they expand just in case.

The commissioner said Monday that the 12-member SEC hasn't talked to any institutions about joining and has no plans to do so. The expansion exploration is just an internal look at the potential advantages and disadvantages in case there is a "significant shift in the conference paradigm," he said.

My take: When it comes down to it, it's all about money. And like the R&B mega-duo Calloway, "I wanna be rich."

Enjoy their only smash hit below... and check out the killer double kick followed by a sweet roundhouse at the 3:40 mark. Stunning.

Gameday from Gwinnett

By Weinman - With eight teams scheduled to shootaround Thursday before the first game starts at Noon ET, squads are limited to a strict 30-minutes of on-court time inside the Arena at Gwinnett Center. To make the most of their time on the court, Strength and Conditioning Coach Tasha Weddle put the team through their warmup routine in a back hallway while Arkansas used their shootaround time.

I'll do my best to keep the updates rolling on the web site, and especially through our Twitter feed, as we prepare for tonight's game against Arkansas. Tip is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET on Fox Sports South (and ESPN360), and on WNSR-560 AM.

The Power of the SEC

From SECsports.com - CBS Sports’ season-to-date coverage of the SEC ON CBS has earned a national household rating/share of 3.8/9, up +36% from a 2.8/6 last year. This 3.8/9 is the highest season-to-date rating for college football at this point in the season on CBS Sports in 10 years since a 4.2/10 in 1999.

CBS Sports’ coverage of the SEC ON CBS on Saturday, Oct. 10, which saw No. 1 Florida defeat No. 4 LSU in prime time, earned a preliminary national rating/share of 6.1/11, up 61% from last year’s 3.8/7 (LSU at Florida 10/11/08).

The Florida-LSU game on CBS Sports scored the highest rating for a college football game on any broadcast network in the 2009 season and is CBS Sports’ highest rated college football game since the SEC Championship game (Alabama-Florida, 9.3/20 on 12/06/08).

More on Internet streaming

By A. Boggs - Just got this update from the SEC on Internet streaming for games as a part of the new television contract with ESPN and CBS. I wrote a blog on this a few weeks ago that summarizes where you can catch the Commodores this year (link here). It looks like the only change is that games televised on ESPNU will not be streamed on ESPN360 or will be available on the network's GamePlan package.

Here's what we received from the SEC:

All games will be available live online except the ESPNU games. You must have that channel on your TV to view those games.
CBS – will be streamed on CBSSports.com
ESPN, ESPN2 – will be streamed on ESPN360
ESPNU – will not be streamed on ESPN360 and will not be available on GamePlan
SEC Network - will be streamed on ESPN360 and be available on GamePlan (with no blackout restrictions)
CSS – will be streamed on ESPN360 and be available on GamePlan (with no blackout restrictions)
FSN - will be streamed on ESPN360 and be available on GamePlan (blackout restrictions apply within SEC territory)

At 11:30 p.m. CT on the day of the games, the complete TV feed (without commercials) will be available free of charge for viewing at the SEC Digital Network (secsports.com).

There will however be a fee if a fan wants to download the game to their computer/phone/etc. or order a DVD copy. (For the late games, they may not be up at 11:30 p.m. CT but will be available as soon as they are digitized.)

ESPN Regional Television and Southeastern Conference introduce ‘SEC Network,’ announce syndication package

By A. Boggs - In a release today, the SEC and ESPN Regional Television has announced their over-the-air broadcast affiliates for their "SEC Network", which will kick off this fall for football season. The breadth of the network is impressive, stretching from Florida in the south to Michigan in the north to Arizona in the west. Other states with affiliates include Pennsylvania, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia, to go along with states that have SEC members.

Here's the official release from the SEC and ESPN Regional...

ESPN Regional Television, the new over-the-air syndication home for Southeastern Conference programming, and the SEC announced today a regionally syndicated college sports package that will air in more than 73 television markets, along with the branding of the syndication package as the SEC Network – all part of the groundbreaking 15-year agreement between ESPN, Inc., and the SEC.
Within the nine-state SEC footprint, the SEC Network will be delivered in markets by the local over-the-air carrier of SEC events. In markets outside the SEC footprint, the syndicated programming will air on either local, over-the-air television stations or regional sports cable networks.

Coverage will feature extensive football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball telecasts, produced by ESPN Regional Television.

“As ESPN moves forward in this landmark agreement with the SEC, ESPN Regional Television is thrilled to provide our viewers with a consistent window for Southeastern Conference football and basketball,” said Pete Derzis, senior vice president & general manager, ESPN Regional Television. “With ESPN’s multimedia platforms, we anticipate SEC sports will touch an unprecedented base of college fans nationwide.”

The SEC Network will feature an SEC football Game of the Week regionally for 13 consecutive Saturdays, beginning Sept. 5. Those telecasts will kick off at noon ET/11 a.m. CT with the live SEC Studio show, followed by the matchup, generally determined 12 to six days in advance. The new kickoff time for the Game of the Week will be 12:21 p.m. ET.

Longtime SEC announcer Dave Neal will call the weekly SEC Network game on Saturdays, along with analyst Andre Ware and reporter Cara Capuano.

The SEC Studio show is produced by ESPN Regional Television at their headquarters in Charlotte, N.C., also the home of ESPNU. The SEC show will kick off Saturday coverage with host Rob Stone and analyst Matt Stinchcomb in the studio.

The regular-season SEC men’s basketball package on the SEC Network beginning in January will consist of Wednesday and Saturday games, including doubleheaders. The SEC Network will also offer regional coverage of multiple rounds from the SEC Men’s Basketball Tournament as well as SEC women’s basketball games on Sundays, also beginning in January.

“The SEC Network, through the efforts of ESPN, will be the largest college sports syndication television package in the country,” SEC Commissioner Mike Slive said. “The comprehensive market coverage in the nine-state SEC area combined with the out-of-market reach gives us significant additional exposure for our programs.”

The markets that will air the package represent more than 54 million television households, or 47 percent of the U.S. Before the first football game this season, as clearance work continues, the coverage area will be larger still. The 15-year agreement between ESPN and the SEC begins with the 2009-10 season and continues through 2023-24.

Find the complete list of affiliates on the SEC's official website, secsports.com.

High-flying freshmen in the SEC

The SEC recently recognized VU freshman Jeffery Taylor, men’s basketball, with its Freshman of the Week Award for his 18-point performance against Alabama A&M last week.

Here’s a look at freshmen from other SEC Eastern Division schools, who are performing well thus far:

Erving Walker
Florida guard, No. 11, 5-8/161 lbs.

The youngster from Brooklyn, N.Y. was averaging 8.5 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.8 assists up to the Gators’ contest with Florida Gulf Coast on Dec. 10. Walker has also earned a starting position in UF’s last three games, including the Florida Gulf Coast matchup.

Trey Thompkins
Georgia forward, No. 33, 6-9/247 lbs.

The freshman forward from Lithonia, Ga. comprises one of the Bulldogs’ top-two scorers, averaging 11.8 points with 5.5 rebounds in four games (updated to UGA’s game against Virginia Tech on Dec. 9). Thompkins has started the last two contests for Head Coach Dennis Felton. The SEC recognized the UGA forward as FOW on Dec. 1.

DeAndre Liggins
Kentucky guard/forward, No. 34, 6-6/202 lbs.

The newcomer from Chicago totals 20.9 minutes per game with 7.4 points and a combined 34 assists -- tallied up to the Wildcats’ tilt with Indiana on Dec. 13. The SEC recognized Liggins as FOW on Dec. 8.

Scotty Hopson
Tennessee guard, No. 32, 6-7/185 lbs.

Hopson, out of Hopkinsville, Ky., totals 9.5 points per game with 1.6 rebounds and 0.9 assists. The SEC recognized Hopson as FOW on Nov. 17 for his 17-point, debut performance against UT-Chattanooga. The UT freshman has also been acknowledged as SEC Newcomer of the Year.

* South Carolina hasn't listed a freshman player on its roster.

Has anyone seen the above freshmen, including Taylor, play, and if so, how do they look?

“Taylor claims SEC FOW Award” Read

Taylor Soaring

Congrats to Jeffery Taylor for earning SEC Freshman of the Week honors for his 18-point effort against Alabama A&M last Wednesday.

Taylor has had an outstanding rookie season in only his first two months on West End. He's second in scoring (13.8), rebounding (6.3) and steals (10) for the Commodores. He's also electrified the crowd with several jaw-dropping dunks.

Coach Stallings touched on Jeff's natural talent in David Boclair's story in the Nashville City Paper this morning.

“Jeff’s ability to get up and play above the rim, his explosiveness to the basket – all of those things are key ingredients to our team,” Stallings told the Nashville City Paper. “It’s something we’ve not had a lot of around here, and he gives us a different dimension that way.”

I have a feeling this won't be the last time Taylor's recognized by the conference. And in case you missed last week's victory over Alabama A&M, here are a couple of Taylor's highlights.
