Tim Corbin announced that Jack Armstrong will be the starting pitcher for the Commodores tomorrow. Although Jack has had some tough luck thus far in the post-season, you might choose to look at the last time he pitched in his native Sunshine State. It was back on April 4, when Armstrong threw six shutout innings to get his fourth win while preventing the Dores from suffering a sweep by the Gators. Plus his hometown of Jupiter is just hours away, so Jack may have to get some extra tickets from his teammates.

Video: Big Jack returns home...sort of
By Eric Jones
It's always good to have someone on every trip that acts as a navigator. You can't spell 'navigator' without 'gator' which is good considering we are in Florida. Yes, I know Vanderbilt is playing the Seminoles, but there is a gator reference right by campus here. The Burt Reynolds dorm is just a Aaron Westlake homerun from Dick Howser Stadium and Burt (or Turd Ferguson for all you SNL fans) did star in the movie "Gator."
Our navigator on this trip is Jupiter, Florida native Jack Armstrong and I had a chance to catch up with him after practice. Here is what Jack had to say.

Sunday starting lineup

by SID
The Commodores are going for their third straight series sweep over the Bulldogs today on an overcast day in Starkville. There is a good chance of rain in the area so hoping the game gets in before it arrives.
The lineup for today's game is the same as Friday night's.
1. Brian Harris SS
2. Anthony Gomez 2B
3. Jason Esposito 3B
4. Aaron Westlake 1B
5. Curt Casali DH
6. Andrew Giobbi C
7. Joe Loftus RF
8. Connor Harrell CF
9. Bryan Johns LF
SP: Jack Armstrong (6-1, 3.64 ERA)
Armstrong is coming off a solid outing against LSU last Sunday. He allowed two runs on six hits in 7.2 innings with three strikeouts and two walks in the 4-3 win over the Tigers.
A win today will clinch Vanderbilt's fifth straight SEC tournament appearance and the seventh in eight seasons under Tim Corbin.

Video: Big Jack's backflip returns
by Barca Blog
Jack Armstrong brought back his signature backflip to the Commodores' pregame huddle against Louisville on Tuesday.
The 6'7" sophomore regularly performed the stunt last year to get the team energized before first pitch, but had yet to do so this season.
This time around, he had an accomplice. Teammate Jason Esposito, who just recently learned the trick, jumped into the circle with Big Jack.
Maybe the move gave Espo some good karma later that night.
(Next time, I request the "Triple Lindy.")

Flip It: Rainy day in SoCal
by SID
The weather isn't particularly great outside today with gray overcast skies and intermittent rain so far on Saturday.
The forecast calls for a 100 percent chance of rain the rest of the day and only going down to around 70 percent by 9 p.m. tonight. It should clear up for a nice sunny tomorrow at Dodger Stadium, but tonight's game against USC is in jeopardy.
Many of the players are studying for midterm exams or doing homework in the hotel. Eric Jones caught up with a few of them Saturday morning.

VU baseball ranked No. 12 in preseason poll
By Travis Young
PG Crosschecker has released its top-100 college baseball preseason poll and the Vanderbilt baseball team is ranked No. 12. VU is one of five SEC teams ranked in the top-20 preseason poll; LSU (3rd), Florida (6th), Arkansas (15th) and Ole Miss (18th).
PG Crosschecker also released its top-500 2010 draft prospects, including college and high school players. Aaron Westlake was tabbed as VU’s top 2010 draft prospect, (No. 294) while Drew Hayes was selected as VU’s top 2010 draft pitching prospect (No. 300). Westlake captured the SEC batting title last year after hitting .377 while Hayes went 4-3 with a 5.56 ERA to go along with 51 strikeouts in 43.2 innings of work.
Sonny Gray and Jack Armstrong have been ranked by PG Crosschecker as the No. 5 and No. 6 draft prospects for the 2011 MLB draft. Vanderbilt is the only team in college baseball to have two players ranked among the top-20 prospects for the 2011 draft. Gray was selected in the 27th round by the Chicago Cubs in the 2008 draft while Armstrong was a 36th round pick by the Rangers in the same year.
Sophomore third baseman Jason Esposito joins Gray and Armstrong among PG Crosscheckers top-50 prospects in the 2011 draft, ranking 49th. Esposito was a seventh round pick by the Kansas City Royals in the 2008 first-year player draft.
PG Crosschecker also lists freshman Commodore lefthander, Sam Selman as the 54th-ranked draft prospect for the draft class of 2012. Selman was a 14th-round pick by the Los Angeles Angels last summer before honoring his commitment to play for the Commodores.

Armstrong making his case

One of the candidates will be hard-throwing sophomore Jack Armstrong.
Last night, the 6-6, 226 pound right-hander gave a solid effort for the Gold team in the Commodores’ intrasquad series opener. Armstrong earned the win, allowing two runs -- one earned -- and three hits in four innings of work.
Armstrong began making his case for a starting job with a terrific summer in the Cape Cod Baseball League. Playing for Wareham, he went 4-1 with a 2.57 ERA and only allowed 27 hits while striking out 31 in 35 innings of work.
“He didn’t pitch a lot for us last year, but went to the Cape over the summer and was the starting pitcher in the All-Star game at Fenway Park,” Corbin told the 104.5 Wake Up Zone. “The progression he’s made over the course of the summer against very good talent only helps his confidence. Guys who have good summers like that really help us out."
The Jupiter, Fla., native only saw limited action in his freshman year, but worked hard on developing his pitches.
“His velocity is in the 94-97 range but the thing about a big kid like that is that one of his best pitches is his changeup," Corbin added. "He has a great feel for it.”

Fall Baseball Update
by Eric Jones - It's hard to pass up a 75 degree day in October with Hawkins Field right across the street from the McGugin Center.
With the Black and Gold Series starting in just a week, I thought I might check out the Commodore baseball scrimmage on Thursday. It turned out to be the closest I got to a Cape Cod summer. There are a good many new faces to learn and as many nicknames to ponder. Today was all about names that you may have heard as veteran pitching highlighted the six-inning intrasquad that ended 4-2. Sophomore Jack Armstrong continued to build off of a very strong summer pitching for Wareham in the Cape Cod League (4-1, 2.57 ERA, 31K in 35 IP). Jack combined with Taylor Hill (2-1, 1.44 ERA, 35K in 31.1IP for Chatham in the Cape) for an impressive performance. In a three-inning start, Armstrong brought the heat striking out 4 including the side to get out of a bases-loaded jam in the second inning. Armstrong was followed by Hill who retired all nine batters he faced with four punchouts to preserve the win.
Richie Goodenow started on the other side of the scorecard working three solid innings, but was victimized by some defensive miscues which allowed two unearned runs. Russell Brewer followed Richie to the mound and threw three scoreless innings with two strikeouts. Brewer was another top summer performer in the Cape where he teamed with Taylor Hill at Chatham. As closer, Russell was 2-1, with a 1.90 ERA and 33K's in 23.1 innings while finishing second in the entire Cape Cod League with 10 saves. The bottom line on this particular day - the summer seems to have been good for Commodore pitching. You can check out all the Commodore who played in the CCL and their summer stats (http://www.capecodbaseball.org/) for yourself.
Another New England Nugget: Freshman Regan Flaherty started at first base and went 2-for-2 with an RBI single and a double. His lefthanded swing is similar to his brother Ryan's and the speed (or lack thereof) was also evident as he got thrown out by homeplate umpire Sonny Gray trying to score from second on a Jordan Wormsley single.
I was just happy that Sonny Gray didn't throw his valuable right arm out of his socket when he called Flaherty out at the plate. Sonny has been watching too many Kimbo Slice snippets on YouTube.
Black and Gold Series: The Black and Gold Series will start on Thursday, October 15. Tim Corbin announced yesterday that the annual fall event will be going to a five-game series: October 15, 16, 18, 19, and 20. All games are scheduled to be broadcast via live audio on vucommodores.com. Stay tuned for times.
